Then
Poor But Proud dates the club for older people to 1 August 1950, in a two-storey clubroom in Clitheroe Gardens let at £26 a year, with an extension finished in the autumn of 1952. Its hall was named the Embling Hall after James H Embling OBE, the first head of Oxhey Wood junior school, who was a founder member of the management committee and its chairman for many years. Members remember bingo, a Knit and Natter group, a warden who lived in a house opposite the club, and coach holidays to Devon, Cornwall and Yarmouth.5,113,217,220,511,640,644
Now
The last of the original building was demolished on 17 October 2013 and flats were built on its site, with the new club standing a few yards away. An Age UK Hertfordshire health and wellbeing centre was launched there on 28 November 2014, with a drop-in, a hot meal every weekday, quizzes, yoga and clinics for feet, hearing and eyes.
