Then

The Grapevine opened in December 1961 on the corner of Prestwick Road and Heysham Drive, behind a large car park, and the council's planning records for the site go back to 1960. The 1960s Ordnance Survey marks it as a pub. An application to extend it followed in 1973. An outline plan of 2011 to replace the pub with 10 small houses was withdrawn. An application of 2014 to turn part of the car park into a hand car wash was approved, and that November the council's plan of housing sites earmarked the site for homes. Planning officers described the pub in 2017 as a two-storey building facing the road junction, with large single-storey additions to the sides and rear, and a block of garages and an area of woodland behind it. That year permission was given for 33 flats, with the officers noting that the Dick Whittington was about half a mile away.126,165,235,236,389,390,726

Now

Demolition began in January 2018 and the site was cleared the following month. Building started that February on The Chess, 33 homes and the first scheme of Three Rivers Homes, the joint venture between Watford Community Housing and the district council. Bugler Developments of Rickmansworth built it. In October 2018 the council said eight homes would have one bedroom and 25 would have two, with 18 for market rent, 10 for social rent and five for shared ownership. The Chess was finished in 2019 and now stands on the site.
