The name

Heysham Drive probably takes its name from Heysham Golf Club. House building after the First World War made the club's first course at Strawberry Gardens too valuable to keep, so it moved to Trumacar Park in April 1928.

Where the club's facts come from: Heysham Golf Club, Strawberry Gardens Course (1910 to 1928), Golf's Missing Links.

How sure we are of the match: Likely

The estate's streets were named after golf courses. The streets page explains how each match was made.

In the story

  • Building the Estate: The estate goes up
Families moved into Heysham Drive and Gleneagles Close in 1949.
  • Shops, pubs and services: Doctors, the clinic and the health centre
General practice was spread across ordinary houses for years. One doctor held his surgery in his own house at the end of Heysham Drive, and the practice worked from a house in Prestwick Road near the bottom of Kilmarnock Road before it moved to the surgery in Oxhey Drive past the police station.
  • Getting about: Buses
The Our Oxhey contributor who wrote in 2011 had been told, although David Reidy's dates show the 346 and 346A running from 5 March 1952, that the 346 started serving South Oxhey about 1960, with a 346A circular by way of Heysham Drive and a rush hour 346B running from the station by Hayling Road, Sandy Lane and Prestwick Road and back.
  • Rebuilding the centre: Other renewal on the estate
The Chess, 33 homes on the site of the Grapevine pub at Prestwick Road and Heysham Drive, was given permission in March 2017 and finished in 2019.
  • Prestwick Road Meadows
The way in is from Prestwick Road, between Little Oxhey Lane and Heysham Drive, and Natural England puts it about fifteen minutes' walk along Prestwick Road from Carpenders Park station.
  • The Grapevine (site)
The Grapevine opened in December 1961 on the corner of Prestwick Road and Heysham Drive, behind a large car park, and the council's planning records for the site go back to 1960.
