In the story
- Building the Estate: The houses and how they were made
A solid fuel fire in the middle of the house warmed the rooms above through a boxed steel chimney, and every pipe was run inside so that nothing froze, which is why the steel houses show no outside plumbing apart from the guttering. Another resident remembers houses at Kirkcaldy Green being built in 1949 of timber with a rendered finish.
