Then
The Submarine Club was the old working men's club, under the station walkway on the side away from South Oxhey, according to a man who was on one of its outings. That side of the railway is Carpenders Park, where the St Meryl estate had begun to be built in 1935, about a decade before the council estate. A resident says she met her husband at the club in September 1952, while he was on leave from the army, and believes her brother and his friends helped to build it. A charabanc outing to Southend set off from the club in the 1960s.5,89,382,616,646
Now
The man who went on one of its outings says that when the club was pulled down a new working men's club was built near the shops at the top of Hayling Road, but he gives no date. Hartcran House, on Gibbs Couch beside the railway, was built in the early 1980s, as the local historian Neil Hamilton remembers. No source we found says whether it took the club's site. In 2016 the council approved turning its offices into 21 flats, and the conversion has since been completed. The position is approximate, at the foot of the walkway on the Gibbs Couch side.
