The name

How sure we are of the match: Likely

The estate's streets were named after golf courses. The streets page explains how each match was made.

In the story

  • Building the Estate: A shopping centre
The main shops grew up near the station, around St Andrew's Road and Bridlington Road, and LCC plans for their shop fronts date from the early 1950s.
  • Shops, pubs and services: The library
In November 1957 the LCC sold Watford Rural District Council the plot at Fairfield Avenue and Bridlington Road, the future library site, for £2,500.
  • Rebuilding the centre: Phase 1: the first four sites
Phase 1A was built on the old Bridlington Road car park at the corner of Oxhey Drive.
  • Visit and look for: Where to find more
A much shorter version was printed in 2010, and about twenty-five copies were sold at L M Wards, the newsagents in Bridlington Road, at five pounds each.
  • Walks
Weekly health walks began on 21 March 2012, organised by the Countryside Management Service and led by local volunteers, meeting at the Bridlington Road end of the precinct at 1pm on Wednesdays.
  • The estate's first library (site)
The estate's first library stood next door to a family home and served the estate until the Bridlington Road library opened in May 1962.
  • Civil Defence headquarters, 39 Oxhey Drive
The building was used by social services for some years, held the temporary library from the summer of 2008 to August 2009 while the Bridlington Road library was being extended, and from 11 May 2011 housed Step Up, a drop-in with training and counselling rooms run by ASCEND and Herts Mind Network with district council funding.
  • Oxhey Library
The estate's first library opened in June 1951 in Little Oxhey Lane, in an old farmhouse, and this library on Bridlington Road replaced it in May 1962, though Poor But Proud gives 20 June.
  • The Pheasant, later The Ox (site)
Opened as The Pheasant and later renamed The Ox, this pub stood on the west side of Bridlington Road, just south of the library and across the road from the shopping precinct.
