The name
Seacroft Gardens probably takes its name from Seacroft Golf Club. It hosted the 1935 English Ladies Close Championship, where Gloria Minoprio caused a stir by playing in trousers rather than a skirt.
Where the club's facts come from: History - Seacroft Golf Club, the club's own history.
How sure we are of the match: Likely
The estate's streets were named after golf courses. The streets page explains how each match was made.
In the story
- The old woods: Pond Wood and the smaller woods
Pond Wood, at Northwick Road and Seacroft Gardens, was a plot of the Oxhey Place farm in 1872, beside a large pond called Park Pond. - Building the Estate: The estate office and yards
Rent collectors went round the houses at first. The estate had its own painters, carpenters, glaziers and grounds staff, who worked from a yard behind the office, entered from Seacroft Gardens, with a greenhouse for the plants in the estate's shrub beds. - Pond Wood
Pond Wood is a small wood at Northwick Road and Seacroft Gardens, known for old pollarded hornbeams that were still being cut in the estate's early years.
